Sam Phillips on Gilmore Girls

Back in 2000, Sam Phillips got a phone call asking her to do the music for Gilmore Girls. The rest, as they say, is history. Gilmore Girls was the first television show that Sam had worked on and the whole creative process included working closely with Amy Sherman-Pallagino, who always had strong opinions on music that often went contrary to the “norms.” Amy wasn’t looking for a “typical” TV score.

Amy once said that Sam’s music felt like it “was coming out of the girls’ heads,” an extension of their thoughts and emotions that helps elevate the show. Sam intentionally wrote with “La’s” and background vocals so as to avoid “stepping on the great, rapid-fire dialogue.” Of course, you can also see Sam Phillips in the episode Partings, her one on-screen appearance for the show!

Sam Phillips spent much of 2016 composing and performing the original score for the revived Gilmore Girls series, recording with the same people who appear in her latest album. This time around, Sam Phillips came to the table read to get a feel for Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life and noted how “easy” it was for her to return to the world of Stars Hollow. And how it’s the kind of show that can “just go on forever,” as all of us fans secretly hope!
